Dolores “Dodie” Osteen, 91, beloved co‑founder of Lakewood Church and mother of Senior Pastor Joel Osteen, passed away peacefully at home on July 30, 2025, due to natural causes. Dodie was born on October 22, 1933, in Baytown, Texas. She married Pastor John Osteen on September 17, 1954, and together they founded Lakewood Church on May 10, 1959. Dodie received widespread recognition for her miraculous recovery from terminal metastatic liver cancer in 1981. Diagnosed at age 48 and given only weeks to live, she attributed her healing to the power of prayer and went on to lead a ministry of prayer and compassion for decades. Known affectionately as "Mama Dodie", she was deeply involved in Lakewood Church ministry—leading prayer, offering spiritual counsel, and regularly speaking at healing services—including an impromptu drive-by healing event that became widely known. Following her husband's death in 1999, Dodie continued in the church leadership and became a spiritual matriarch for the congregation, while her son Joel became senior pastor. Lakewood grew tremendously under his leadership and her spiritual influence.
