We have all heard of cholesterol, but what exactly is it? Basically, it's a fatty substance found in all of the cells in our bodies. We actually need some cholesterol to produce hormones and help with digestion. Our bodies produce all of the cholesterol we need, but consuming saturated fat, such as fat that is contained in animal products, as well as trans fats that are in commercially produced foods, can increase our cholesterol to unhealthy levels. High cholesterol foods such as red meat and full-fat dairy, can also raise our cholesterol levels. A few good ways to reduce our cholesterol levels include; add whey protein to our diet, eat more foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, stop eating trans fats, increase soluble fiber intake, and reduce saturated fat intake which is mostly found primarily in red meat.
