Leon learns that the cult Los Illuminados, led by the charismatic and fanatical Osmund Saddler, is using Las Plagas to create an army capable of global domination. Leon eventually rescues Ashley, but their escape is far from simple. Ashley herself has been infected with Las Plagas, making her a ticking time bomb and a potential weapon. Leon’s mission shifts from simple extraction to finding a cure. Along the way, he encounters allies and enemies from his past, including the enigmatic Ada Wong, whose true loyalties remain unclear as she pursues her own shadowy objectives involving the parasite. The journey takes Leon and Ashley from the cursed village to a massive gothic castle ruled by the unstable Ramon Salazar, a diminutive but cruel noble who embraces Saddler’s ideology. Inside the castle, Leon faces grotesque bio-engineered monstrosities, deadly traps, and fanatical cultists. Salazar seeks to prove his devotion by eliminating Leon, but ultimately falls to his own obsession with power and mutation. As the plot unfolds, Leon discovers that Saddler plans to infect Ashley deliberately, allowing her to return home and spread Las Plagas to the highest levels of the U.S. government. Determined to stop this, Leon presses on to a fortified island used as a research and military base. There, he confronts Jack Krauser, a former comrade whose disillusionment and thirst for strength have driven him to embrace Las Plagas. Their clash is both physical and ideological, ending with Leon overcoming his past. With help from Ada, Leon acquires a device to remove Las Plagas from both himself and Ashley. In the final confrontation, Saddler reveals his monstrous transformed form, embodying the cult’s twisted vision of “enlightenment.” Leon defeats him, and Ada escapes with a sample of the parasite, hinting at future threats. As the island self-destructs, Leon and Ashley narrowly escape by jet ski, leaving the nightmare behind. Though the mission succeeds, Leon knows the battle against bioterrorism is far from over. Resident Evil 4 ends with survival, sacrifice, and the chilling reminder that humanity’s greatest enemy is often its own pursuit of power.
