#shorts This time, I spent three days and two nights at a small, hidden hot spring inn in Nagano, Japan. It is a quiet inn with only nine guest rooms, and its hot spring has long been cherished by local villagers and travelers along the historic Nakasendo route, once known as a healing “medicinal water.” The inn is home to seven cats and one dog, who live as part of the owner’s family. The cats move freely between the inn and the beautiful natural surroundings along the Kiso River, living relaxed and peaceful lives. With the room door left open, they would gently come in to rest, and sometimes even sleep beside me at night. During meals, they would quietly join at the table — never asking for human food. Spending time with the cats while watching the Kiso River, enjoying the sunshine, and taking slow walks together through breathtaking scenery became unforgettable moments of this stay.
