"In the morning" is an excerpt from the stage music that Edvard Grieg composed in 1874 for the play Peer Gynt, written by the Norwegian author Henrik Ibsen. The theme in this piece is alternately played by the flute and the oboe. The piece describes the sunrise during Act IV, Scene 4 from Ibsen's play. Hero Peer Gynt is stranded in the Moroccan desert after his companions stole his yacht and abandoned him while he was sleeping. The scene begins with the following description: “A grove of palm trees and acacia trees at dawn. Peer Gynt is in a tree, protecting himself with a broken branch from a group of monkeys. With the Peer Gynt suite being best known outside of the context of the play, In the Morning brings to the listener's mind images of Scandinavia rather than images of the desert for which the play was composed.
