Known as the Ming dynasty the Chinese became a superpower having influence over trade, culture and might. In this video we attempt to look at the growth and fall of this dynasty along with lesser known facts about them. Let us look at the background of how this dynasty came to hold the reins in China. During the Mongolian rule there was a lot of unrest and rebellions had started taking place. Among those revolting were a group called the Red Turbans affiliated to a secret Buddhist group named The White Lotus. Zhu Yuanzhang belonged to this group and came from a very poor peasant family. He married the daughter of a rebel commander and soon became popular. He took over the city of Nanjing which later would be the capital of the Ming dynasty. He quelled the rebellious forces of others and established control over the major part of TheYangste River making him the undisputed leader. He took the name of Hongwu which meant vastly martial. He built a wall around the city of Nanjing and apparently had already had idea of setting up a Confucian law for the land. Now we shall look at some of the interesting facts about this dynasty. In the early 15th century the capital was shifted to Beijing from Nanjing. The meaning of Beijing was Purple Forbidden City. The Great Wall of China as we know it today had its origins during this period. This dynasty was known for its admirals and navigators. It is said they travelled as far as Africa. The typical blue and white porcelain which we use till date had its inception during this dynasty. This dynasty moved from paper currency to coins. The dynasty faced one of the worst earthquakes in history. There was economic prosperity during this period. The fall of this dynasty is attributed to shortage of silver and number of rebellions.
