It emphasizes the certainty of this day and the major transformations that will occur when it arrives. The surah begins by declaring that the coming of the Inevitable (Al-Waqi'ah) cannot be denied. It will bring about a great upheaval — the earth will be shaken, and the mountains will be reduced to dust, scattered in the air like particles. Humanity will then be divided into three distinct groups: The People of the Right (Ashab al-Maymanah) – those who will receive their record in their right hand and are destined for Paradise. The People of the Left (Ashab al-Mash’amah) – those who will receive their record in their left hand and are destined for Hell. The Foremost (As-Sabiqun) – those who were the most righteous and devout in life; they will be the nearest to Allah and occupy the highest ranks in Paradise. They are few in number, especially among later generations, but they hold a privileged status.
