It is important to note that compounds have different properties from the elements that constitute them. When elements combine to form compounds, they undergo chemical reactions, resulting in the formation of entirely new substances with unique characteristics. Compounds are held together by chemical bonds, which can be ionic or covalent in nature. In an ionic compound, such as sodium chloride (NaCl), the bonding occurs between positively charged ions (cations) and negatively charged ions (anions). In the case of NaCl, sodium (Na) donates an electron to chlorine (Cl), forming Na+ and Cl- ions, which then attract each other to form the compound. In contrast, covalent compounds are formed when elements share electrons. Covalent bonds are typically found in molecules, where atoms are held together by the sharing of electron pairs.
