Record rainfall caused flooding throughout the region, which was made worse by the failure of the city's waste water treatment plant. Streets were filled with water, that submerged cars and filled houses. The cities water supply was completely contaminated, making it unsafe for humans. All residents of the city were ordered to evacuate due to the situation, with emergency shelters set up after the evacuation centre was filled. The floods meant the city was cut off from the surrounding areas, as roads became blocked. Neighbouring settlements were also evacuated as the worst floods in a generation hit the area.
