The Minuet in D minor, BWV Anh. 116 is one of those little treasures from the Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach. For a long time people thought it was written by J.S. Bach, but today we know that its real composer is unknown. Unlike the famous G major and G minor minuets (BWV Anh. 114 & 115), which we now know were composed by Christian Petzold, this one remains a bit of a mystery. What I love about this minuet is its simple beauty. It has a gentle sadness, but also a quiet grace that makes it really special. It’s not complicated or showy, just pure, honest music that has charmed piano students and listeners for centuries.
