🎬 “The Woman King” like you’ve never seen it brought to life on stage through every powerful WAR SCENE! Welcome to the University of Ilorin Performing Arts Department live theatrical adaptation of the most gripping moments from The Woman King, a film that celebrates strength, sisterhood, and the untold story of Africa’s fiercest all-female army. Inspired by the acclaimed 2022 film The Woman King, written by Dana Stevens and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, this performance captures the heart of a cinematic masterpiece that starred Viola Davis as General Nanisca — the fearless leader of the Agojie warriors of Dahomey. 💥 This stage production reimagines the film’s most intense battle scenes, showcasing the courage, discipline, and unity of the real-life women warriors who defended the Kingdom of Dahomey in the 18th and 19th centuries. The story is set against the backdrop of historical tensions between the Dahomey Kingdom (modern-day Benin) and the Oyo Empire (in present-day Nigeria), highlighting the struggle for power, resistance to colonization, and internal conflicts around slavery. 🎭 With bold choreography, live drumming, and raw performance energy, our cast brings to life the emotional and physical stakes of war, identity, and liberation in pre-colonial West Africa.
