Today's stock market news - Thursday, Dec 17: The S&P 500 and NASDAQ are making new record highs. How long can the markets move higher? Will they crash soon, or will we see a "Santa Claus Rally"? The markets are on fire: The S&P 500 and the NASDAQ make new record highs! Let's take a look at all the indices: The Dow is up 149 points = 0.49% , the S&P 500 advanced 0.58%, and the NASDAQ climbed 0.66%. But let's start from the beginning: Before the markets opened, Weekly Jobless Claims were released and came in worse than expected: 885,000 vs. 817,000. And as long as we are in this pandemic and cases are rising, it could get worse. But traders are 100% focused on a stimulus deal right now. And there was some great news this morning: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says stimulus deal ‘close at hand’. And the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, also said that they are moving closer to a deal. She said: “We made some progress this morning”. Soooooo.... will we get a stimulus deal before Christmas? It's definitely possible, and that's why traders pushed the markets to new all-time highs! But stocks weren't the only ones making new all-time highs! Bitcoin jumped to a new all-time high at $23,421 - that's a 12% gain! It pulled back below $23,000 by the end of the day, but it's still 6% higher right now In other market news: The SEC charges Robinhood with misleading customers. The SEC said that Robinhood has been misleading customers about its revenue sources and that they did not always offer the best execution, which they have to. Of course, Robinhood doesn't want the SEC to publicly wash their dirty laundry and quickly agreed to pay $65 million to settle the charges.
