Here are 9 crazy conspiracy theories that turned out to be true! 9 - Gulf of Tonkin The Gulf of Tonkin conspiracy or the USS Maddox incident was highly debated and finally, analysis shows that the original claims that the North Vietnamese Navy attacked the USS Maddox was made up. Two main events happened during this time an attack on August 2nd, 1964, an one on August 4th. On the 2nd it was reported that while the Maddox was patrolling for information on the North Vietnamese Navy like the location of coastal radar transmitters and any other useful information that could be gathered from being in international waters. When three North Vietnamese patrol boats started to pursue the Maddox. The North Vietnamese boats launched a torpedo and opened fire. Their boats were heavily damaged by the Maddox though and both retreated. On the 4th is when things get tricky, almost the entire telling of events were made upthat day. It was said that the Maddox reported seeing enemy boats, torpedo attacks, enemy cockpit lights, and other sure signs of enemy attack. The Maddox fired off their own attack, but in reality, they were fighting no one. Almost every account of the incident comes up short, it was long thought that this was a fabricated event to escalate war, and that was proven true. This incident was a tactic to take the war into US hands and fight communists and escalate war tension to get what they wanted. 8 - MK ULTRA Project MK Ultra is more commonly known under a much more ominous name, as the CIA's mind control program. Even if you aren’t a conspiracy buff, you’ve probably heard rumors or some crazy man shouting about how the government is experimenting on its citizens. Well, don’t panic it’s not happening!... Rather, it’s not happening now. It did happen in the 1950s. The CIA experimented on US and Canadian citizens and almost all none of the participants consented or even knew they were being experimented on. The first type of people that were targeted were the ones no one would investigate too heavily - call girls, substance abusers, and mental patients, basically people the media wouldn’t consider credible. When that wasn’t enough they moved onto the general public. The “experiments” performed happened in hospitals, in prisons, and even colleges. MK Ultra included a vast amount of research topics based on different goals, including creating a chemical to aid in interrogation, memory-erasing, and giving subjects LSD to see if any of the “mind-altering effects” would be helpful to the government. Additional procedures were subjecting people to sensory deprivation, verbal abuse, isolation, hypnosis, various chemicals and drugs, and a variety of psychological torture. That “crazy man” isn’t sounding so crazy anymore... 7 - Tuskegee syphilis This is one of many examples of horrendous things the African American community was subjected to by scientific and medical communities. From 1932 to 1972 the Tuskegee Syphilis experiment was conducted in secret. The experiment is exactly what it sounds like.. It was used to gather information on what happens when rural African American men with syphilis were left untreated. It included around 600 “participants” and by participants, we mean folks that were tricked into becoming part of the study.. while it was disguised as free health care by the US government. The experiment took place in Tuskegee Alabama, having one of the highest rates of syphilis at the time, and 200 involuntary participants were left untreated... Even though the standard treatment for syphilis, penicillin, was established in 1947 the experiment lasted all the way until 1972. It’s because of real-life events like this that other conspiracy theories start to form.
