Crime and Punishment - Dostoyevsky's

Masterpiece Crime and Punishment is a famous Russian novel written by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. The novel deals deeply with the social and political changes, human inner world and moral problems in Russia in the second half of the 19th century. The main character of the novel, Rodion Raskolnikov, is a poor law student. He sees himself as someone who can be useful to society, but he is in financial difficulties. One day, he decides to kill Alyona Ivanovna, an old and cruel moneylender. In this way, he thinks he can help both himself and others. However, during the murder, Alyona's sister Lizaveta also comes to the house and Raskolnikov is forced to kill her too. This event turns Raskolnikov's life upside down. He does not tell anyone about his crime, but begins to live in remorse and fear. He finds himself constantly exhibiting suspicious behavior. Detective Porfiri Petrovich, who is investigating the murder, goes after Raskolnikov and engages him in a psychological war. Raskolnikov meets Sofya Marmeladov, who is also the daughter of a poor family. After her father's death, Sofia works as a prostitute to support her family. Raskolnikov sees that Sofia is pure and good-hearted and admires her. Sofia also understands that Raskolnikov is suffering and shows love to him. Raskolnikov confesses his crime to Sofia and asks for her forgiveness. Sofia tries to persuade Raskolnikov to surrender to the police, but he resists. Raskolnikov thinks that confessing his crime will humiliate him and expose him to the judgment of society. However, over time, under the influence of Sofia, he begins to listen to the voice of his conscience. Eventually, he goes to the police and confesses his crime and is exiled to Siberia. Sofia follows him and supports him. While Raskolnikov is serving his sentence in Siberia, he experiences a spiritual change and clings to life again, thanks to Sofia's love.
