Breaking of Kola Nut

The Igbo traditional breaking of kola nut like other aspects of Igbo tradition and culture has been adulterated with western cultures. This video presents the breaking of Kola nut using the old traditional methodology (our fathers' ways). Presentation of kola nuts is usually done in twos followed by multiples of fours (4, 8, 16 etc). The prayers offered during breaking of kola nut could be divided into two - general prayers and direct prayer usually germane to the occasion at hand. Brevity is a virtue during prayers over kola nut, as it is believed that the spirits looses interest in a prolonged prayer (Agojie oji chi ma muo atana ya).
