The song itself was originally recorded by Benny Goodman and his orchestra, and has been covered by many star singers, including Ella Fitzgerald and Bing Crosby duetting with Rosemary Clooney. The title refers to poker players encountering a rich steady loser, whom they wish they could get onto a "slow boat to China" , being the longest trip imaginable at the time.
