We arrived in Chiang Mai from Chiang Rai on 31st December 2025. We took a bus journey down to Chiang Mai and it was great, the bus was very comfortable and the journey took around 3 hours. After checking into our hotel (the Narinthra Heritage and a beautiful hotel it was), we ventured out and Chiang Mai was a lovely place to see in the New Year, lots of street light displays, live music and a huge food market on the main street at Tha Phae Gate end of the city near our hotel, we had a great night. You will notice the buddhist service taking place in the temple with the use of string: A wonderful observation of a profound Lanna (Northern Thai) New Year tradition. The string you saw is called "Sai Sin" (สายสิญจน์) or a sacred holy thread. Here is what that ritual signifies, especially on New Year's Eve: Blessing & Protection: The white threads are blessed by monks and are believed to offer protection against evil spirits, misfortune, and ghosts, while inviting good luck, health, and prosperity for the coming year. Connecting the Community: During New Year's Eve ceremonies (often held at major temples like Wat Chedi Luang), a long, continuous white thread is connected to a Buddha statue, passed through the hands of chanting monks, and then strung over the heads of the entire congregation. Symbol of Unity: The thread connects everyone to the Buddha and the Sangha (monkhood), symbolizing a collective, spiritual, and protective "halo". It represents the Buddhist teachings and the interconnectedness of all people. New Year's Eve Ritual: The ceremony allows people to wash away the misfortunes of the past year and start the new year with merit and a "purified" spirit. Why Around the Head: While often tied around the wrist (as a bracelet), looping the thread around the head is sometimes done in larger ceremonies to ensure the blessings cover the individual, or as part of a deeper dedication. It is considered a great honour to receive this blessing, and local tradition often advises wearing the string until it falls off naturally.
