Hi! My name is Rick Hall. I am from a company called IGNITE, based in Nottingham, England. I will be doing a simple sound experiment at the IUCAA Science Center in Pune, India. I will use a Slinky to demonstrate how we can make beautiful Sound Effects just like in a Science Fiction Film. For this I will use a Slinky and two pieces of string. We have another way of doing it. Fix the Slinky to the bottom of a Plastic Cup and make a small hole in the base of the cup. You can use the Cup as an Amplifier. The vibrations from the Slinky transmit in through the Air inside the Cup with amazing Sound Effects. This is a very simple experiment which uses everyday simple objects but produces a very dramatic Sound Effect. That’s what science is all about – making children curious to see how things work. So, have loads of fun. Let me take this experiment to some children. Here is a good way of making Sound louder by converting a Plastic Cup into an Amplifier. Hold the cup and be ready and then shake the slinky – which will go up-down. See what wonderful sound this equipment makes. Well you can play for hours with this amazing experiment. This work is supported by IUCAA (www.iucaa.in) and TATA Trust (http://www.tatatrusts.org/) and (www.tata.com/aboutus/sub_index/Tata-trusts) TATA Trust: Education is one of the key focus areas for Tata Trusts, aiming towards enabling access of quality education to the underprivileged population in India. To facilitate quality in teaching and learning of Science education through workshops, capacity building and resource creation, Tata Trusts have been supporting Muktangan Vigyan Shodhika (MVS), IUCAA's Children’s Science Centre, since inception.
