New pope chosen, emerges from Vatican balcony

Robert Prevost has been elected as the first American pope, and made his first public appearance since donning the robes of the pontiff Thursday afternoon to address the crowd waiting to see him at the Vatican. Prevost will take the name Leo XIV. White smoke billowed out of the Sistine Chapel on Thursday, indicating Catholic cardinals from around the world have elected a new pope. The smoke appeared around 6 p.m. local time, suggesting the new pontiff was picked after the fourth ballot.
