[LIVE] Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time | October 27, 2024 | 8:00 AM Holy Mass 37th PRISON AWARENESS SUNDAY “The Church thru the VIPS: Partners of the PDL is their Journey Towards Wholeness with Full of Hope” In 1975, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines(CBCP) responded to a letter from death row prisoners at New Bilibid Prison by forming the Episcopal Commission on Prisoners’ Welfare (ECOPRIW). This commission, later renamed the Episcopal Commission on Prison Pastoral Care (ECPPC) in 1998, became the CBCP’s agency dedicated to the welfare of prisoners. To raise awareness of the plight of those incarcerated, the Commission established Prison Awareness Sunday, observed on the last Sunday of October since 1987. The government followed suit with the National Correctional Consciousness Week (NACOCOW) eight years later. These initiatives reflect the Gospel’s message of hope and healing, as exemplified in the story of Bartimaeus, who was healed by Jesus despite being rebuked by others. Today, the Church calls for compassion and support for Persons Deprived of Liberty, urging the faithful to be a source of hope and light for those in darkness. As we celebrate the 37th Prison Awareness Sunday, we are reminded of the Synodal Church’s mission to bring Christ’s love to those in need, particularly prisoners, and to help them experience God’s saving grace through our compassionate actions.
