People speak out about man shot by authorities

(4 Jun 2021) Members of a neighborhood spoke out Friday after a man they knew was fatally shot by authorities who were part of a task force trying to arrest him that included U.S. Marshals. Authorities did not immediately release the name of the man killed in the shooting Thursday afternoon, but a woman who was in a longtime relationship with him identified him as Winston Smith Jr., a 32-year-old father of three who liked to make kid-friendly music videos and do comedy skits. Friday, some were demanding answers. "I want names. I want faces. I want experience, history. I want all of that. Any information that can be released publicly it needs to get out so everybody can see the faces of the people that killed my brother," said Kidale Smith, the brother of Winston Smith Jr. Authorities said Friday that members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force were trying to arrest Smith on a warrant for illegally carrying a firearm when he was shot by a deputy from Hennepin County and a deputy from Ramsey County. State investigators say Smith fired a handgun from inside his car.
