It is a known fact that zinc plays a vital role in the function of the immune system, so under the current global circumstances, it is no wonder people are upping their zinc game. But once again, where it comes from and the balance by which nature intends, is being overlooked. Zinc in supplemental form does not perform the same way in the body as zinc from natural source. Zinc supplements increase a liver protein called metallothionein (MT). MT will bind to copper 1000x more than Zn, thus decreasing bio-available copper, increasing cholesterol and oxidative stress: blocks copper absorption and ceruplasmin production, which will affect thyroid hormone production, conversion, cellular energy production, and increase ferrous (toxic) iron in the body/tissues. All of which negatively affect and weaken the immune system! The best food source of zinc come from oysters. Oysters are a power food containing more zinc per serving than any other food along with vitamin D, B vitamins, copper, iron, magnesium and selenium. Eating just 2 a day will offer up the RDA. Others foods high in zinc include: meat, shellfish, dairy, and eggs.
