I made this faux leather journal for a friend that does Civil War re-enacting, and it was shipped out to him today. Sorry the audio is a bit quiet........ one of these days I will get it right. anyway, the process started with the box from sweet and low packets, cut open and flattened, snipped off the extra tabs, save one for the pocket..... I covered the entire thing inside and out with brown paper I had treated with my spray misting bottle of glycerine and water, crumpling by hand and then staining with Jim Holtz distress ink in "Walnut Stain". it was glued to the cardstock box with Mod Podge, matte, and also double coated with plenty of drying time between. I hand stitched the edges with cotton embroidery floss, after tapping small holes into it with a small brad and hammer [sewing through cardstock and paper is tough]. the final coat of Mod Podge was applied after the stitching, and an extra pocket was made to hold the sealing wax stick. I cut copier paper to size for the flap pocket, and individually soaked each page in warm tea and dried them on paper towels overnight. They could be more distressed by crumpling and flattening, or staining more with wet coffee grinds or wet tea bags, or distress ink, or even dirt.......... as much faux antiquing as desired. the finished product is held shut with a length of hemp twine.
