Transcription (partial because of lack of space on this section) : 0:21 - Dr. Becky: It's not always possible to predict suicide and that people who look like they lead a very privileged and perhaps happy life and who have a lot humor in their life and a lot going from them. Incredibly talented people can still really be affected by depression which can leads to suicide. 0:43 - Who can you speak to about this? Suicide is a really serious issue but this doesn't mean that you contact people about suicide if they may be contemplating it and there are certain people here affected by suicide more so than others particularly people have been suffering from mental health difficulties who are... if they are go a long history of drugs and substance misuse, if it's a history of trauma in their life, if they had a very significant, recent stress in their life. ........ 02:00 - Why talk to some about suicide? For some people, this might be really uncomfortable topic to bring out with someone, it is very sensitive and you don’t know how the other person’s going to react. The reason it's important to talk to people about suicide though, it's because when someone is experiencing suicidal thoughts and they’re starting to have a plan that they may actually act on suicide, then, this will be quite fluctuating that they will constantly go from being perhaps quite serious about taking that action and then those thoughts can change so they can dip in and out of that so with you actually talking to them and them having that opportunity to open up about it, it might mean that, it takes them out from being very actively suicidal so although it maybe a really difficult conversation to have and you aren't even sure of this person is having serious suicidal thoughts, it is worth mentioning it. 03:00 - When you want to talk someone about suicide? If they are very depressed there's a a couple of things that are good to talk to them about. It's a good to ask .. "have you ever had thoughts of suicide" and just asking them outright - had that been something? If it hasn't, they will just be able to say "no, no that's not something I've thought about'. If they have, it might be a huge relief for them because it might be the first time someone has asked them this question and this might be something that’s been constantly on their mind for the last couple of weeks, the last number of months, might be something that's on their mind daily, so it might be that you might be giving them a really good opportunity for them actually talk about it and you can possibly talk about ways for them to seek some help....... 5:11 - What to do when you know someone is actively suicidal? Another really important point that i'l like to make is that if a close friend or family member or someone who confides in you, someone who is in your life, if they are showing signs of being suicidal and you get a very bad idea, you get a very bad picture and they showing some this warning signs.. that they're active suicidal thoughts and they are making a plan to end their life and they may take that action very soon............................... If that's the case, do not leave them alone, and it's ok for you to make that call or to intervene without their permission, Don't leave them alone and make sure that anyway that they might use any means, they might use to end their life is out of their sight and not easy for them to access. While you are waiting for help to arrive such us an ambulance to arrive, don't leave them alone, and stay with them. I know it’s a really difficult topic and something that is really difficult to know how to handle on your own so it's something that you do need more guidance on, there's more information on our website but you can also call, particularly in the U.K call 999, you will be able to get some information about what to do next if someone's actively suicidal they can be linked in with the Accident & Emergency service, they're professional there who will able to help with that crisis.
