The name “Montha” was contributed by Thailand, and in Thai it means “fragrant flower” or “beautiful flower”. Under the regional naming convention for the North Indian Ocean basin (Bay of Bengal + Arabian Sea), when a system reaches storm strength it gets a name to aid communication and warnings. --- Current status & forecast As of late October 27–28, the system has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm and is moving north-northwest over the Bay of Bengal. It is forecast to make landfall on the coast of Andhra Pradesh (between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada) on the evening/night of October 28, 2025. At landfall it is expected to have sustained winds of 90-100 km/h, gusting up to ~110 km/h. Moving inland the storm will weaken but its rain-bands will continue to affect nearby states (Telangana, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and beyond) for days. Areas likely to be impacted Eastern coastal Andhra Pradesh is the primary land-fall zone. Adjacent states such as Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and inland states like Jharkhand are under warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall. Major cities such as Chennai and coastal districts along Tamil Nadu are on alert for strong winds and rainfall. Strong winds: At landfall, winds up to ~100 km/h may damage weak structures, uproot trees, topple power lines. Heavy rainfall: Rainfall could be very heavy (115–210 mm in 24 h in some zones) in coastal & near-coastal regions. Coastal flooding & rough seas: The coastal swell, storm surge and tidal rise could inundate low-lying areas, especially near the coast and estuaries. Disruption: Transport, power, communication lines may be disrupted. Fishing and sea-activity especially risky. Secondary inland effects: After landfall, rainfall bands may cause flooding, landslides in interior and hilly regions. What you should do (especially in Chennai/Coastal Tamil Nadu/Andhra region) Stay tuned to local weather bulletins from IMD and local authorities. Avoid going out to sea or fishing; ports may be closed or warning signals hoisted. Secure loose outdoor items (roofs, awnings), check drainage in your locality. Avoid being in low-lying areas prone to flooding; know evacuation routes and nearby shelters. Prepare an emergency kit (torch, battery backup, important documents, cash, medicines). In Chennai and nearby coastal districts: avoid the beach, avoid going near the shoreline during high wind/swell conditions. After the storm: be cautious about fallen power lines, debris, flooded roads, unsafe structures. The east coast of India (Bay of Bengal side) is prone to cyclones during the post-monsoon season (Oct–Dec). Montha appears to be one of the first significant storms in 2025 for that region. With climate-change influences, storms may intensify faster or carry heavier rainfall, increasing risks to coastal communities. The authorities are treating this with urgency — evacuations & disaster forces are already mobilised.
