About the Shooting Gallery

In Katharine’s time, the basement housed boiler rooms, air washing and fan rooms (an early type of air conditioning), and stalls for showering and changing after outdoor athletics. When Mary and Charlie Babcock purchased Reynolda from her family in 1934, Mary planned improvements that would keep the present style of the bungalow, but infused it with the Streamlined Modern and Art Deco trends that were all the rage in the mid-1930s. She hired McMillen, Inc., one of the leading New York interior decorators of the period. Mary’s most enduring change: “basement fun,” which included black rubber tile floors for roller skating, a bowling alley, shooting gallery, ping pong room, and other “rainy day entertainment.” The Babcocks and their friends could make their own fun -- playing cards, dancing, or enjoying drinks in the Art Deco bar. Produced by: Aaron Canipe About Reynolda: Reynolda, in Winston-Salem, NC, is a 53-year-old museum at the center of Reynolda’s 170 acres. Reynolda House Museum of American Art presents a renowned art collection in a historic and incomparable setting: the original 1917 interiors of Katharine and R.J. Reynolds’s historic home. Spanning 250 years, the collection is an uncompromisingly selective one, a chronology of American art, with each artist represented by one work of major significance. The Reynolda experience includes a free app called Reynolda Revealed; touring exhibitions in the museum’s Mary and Charlie Babcock Wing; formal gardens, conservatory, and walking trails of Reynolda Gardens; and more than 25 of the estate’s original buildings repurposed as shops and restaurants in Reynolda Village.
