How Does a Clutch Work? A clutch is a component used to transfer the power generated by the engine to the wheels through the transmission. When driving in a specific gear, the clutch disc and pressure plate are pressed together, allowing the engine's power to be transmitted to the transmission. When the clutch pedal is pressed, these two parts separate, and the engine's power is not transmitted to the transmission. As a result, the engine runs idle. The transmission gears can then move freely, allowing you to change gears. When the driver releases the clutch pedal, the clutch disc and pressure plate come into contact again, which enables the engine's power to be transferred to the wheels, and the vehicle moves.
