Musicians choose their shruthi based on their vocal / instrument’s abilities and convenience. Also, in a group performance, the musicians align to the same shruthi to synchronize their performance. The shruthi is also known as Kattai (in Tamil) where they are referred to by specific numbers. There are 12 shruthis / kattais in all: Shruthi C or 1 Kattai Shruthi C# or 1.5 Kattai Shruthi D or 2 Kattai Shruthi D# or 2.5 Kattai Shruthi E or 3 Kattai Shruthi F or 4 Kattai Shruthi F# or 4.5 Kattai Shruthi G or 5 Kattai Shruthi G# or 5.5 Kattai Shruthi A or 6 Kattai Shruthi A# or 6.5 Kattai Shruthi B or 7 Kattai A Shruthi can be played as a drone sound (shruthi box) or using a Tanpura. There are 2 variations of Shruthi at every pitch - Panchama Shruthi (often referred to as just Shruthi), and Madhyama Shruthi. The 4 strings of a Tanpura either plays Pa-Ṡa-Ṡa-Sa (for Panchama Shruthi) or Ma-Ṡa-Ṡa-Sa (for Madhyama Shruthi).
