Outline • The word “Advent” comes from a Latin word meaning – The Coming! • Early Christians thought there were three different meanings to be found in the Advent or the days of coming 1st – The coming of the Son of God to earth in human form as the babe in the manger. 2nd – The coming of Jesus into the lives, hearts, and action of those who accepted Him as their Lord and Savior. 3rd – The future coming when Jesus will return as King! • Prophecies concerning His first and second coming: • Micah 5:2 • I Thessalonians 4:16 Advent- The Two-Fold Coming! • The word advent means “coming” but it can also mean “arrival.” 1. First Coming – Christmas o We remember Jesus birth as a baby, fulfilling prophecy in humble obscurity to redeem fallen humanity. 2. Second Coming – Parousia o Anticipating His glorious return to judge the world and establish His earthly kingdom and bring salvation fully. o Parousia is a Greek word meaning “presence”, “arrival”, or “coming.” 3. What is the Connection between the two? o A Single Event – The incarnation (first coming) and the second coming are seen as two phases of God’s plan to bring His Kingdom to earth. o Hope & Judgment – Advent prepares believers for both an historical even of Christmas and the future event of Christ’s return, which will bring final justice and completion. 4. The Message of Advent – The Second Coming! a. Anticipation – Living in expectation of Jesus return. Titus 2:13 2 Peter 3:12 TPT b. Preparation and Repentance- everyday should be a time for self-examination. A turning from sin and being spiritually ready, much like the first followers awaited the Messiah. 2 Peter 3:11 TPT c.
