Since 1937, the Hazenberg family's dairy farm has been located in Rotstergaast, Friesland. Sander is the fourth generation to work on the farm. Over the past 85 years, the Hazenberg family has kept up with the times. "Our dairy farm has evolved over all these years," says Sander. "From a loose-housing barn with 12 cows and a walk-through milking parlor to a freestall barn with a 2x5 herringbone parlor with automatic take-off. We extended it to 2x10 in 2009, and in 2020, we switched to milking robots." The family milks 160 cows and has 80 head of young stock. An important part of their farming practice is pasture grazing. Sander has opted for the Siesta grazing principle. This means the cows go to the pasture twice a day for 3 hours each time. They have enough capacity with the robots to achieve an average of 2.7 to 2.9 milkings per cow in the summer. In the winter, this number increases to between 3.3 and 3.5 milkings per day." Sander and Els deliberately chose the DeLaval VMS V300 milking robot because of the pre-treatment and attachment methods. "The way the teat is cleaned with water ensures good stimulation. The teats are then dried well, which allows for a quick milk flow and efficient milking." The Hazenberg family's milking robots have recently been updated to the latest software and the new DeLaval farm management platform, called DeLaval Plus.
