India’s telecom ministry initially mandated that all new smartphones must come with the Sanchar Saathi cybersecurity app pre-installed and non-removable. Devices already in the supply chain were required to receive the app through a software update within 90 days, and manufacturers had to submit proof of compliance within 120 days. What Sanchar Saathi does: Reports lost or stolen phones Verifies whether a device is genuine Blocks fake or suspicious mobile connections Helps report telecom-related cyber fraud The app has already helped block millions of stolen devices and fraudulent numbers, with the government claiming it enhances security, not surveillance. However, after criticism, the government rolled back the rule, making the app optional. Users can now choose to install or delete it freely.
