Garbage Day Sequence | Silent Night Deadly Night 2

Bless Eric Freeman for giving us his deliciously hammy performance as Ricky’s homicidal brother in ‘Silent Night Deadly Night 2’ (1987). It never fails to make me smile. If you’ve seen it, you know that SNDN2 is mostly clips from the first movie. The whole idea for the sequel was to repackage existing footage without spending any money. Thankfully, director Lee Harry convinced the producers to cough up $250K so he could shoot additional footage for a followup where Ricky Caldwell (brother to the first film’s killer) continues the family tradition of mass murder on the holidays. The sequel didn’t make big bucks like its predecessor, but Freeman’s ott performance later became an Internet sensation thanks to the infamous ‘Garbage Day’ meme (pulled from the sequence where Ricky kills all his neighbors, dropping bizarre one liners and laughing robotically as he goes). Freeman got sparing direction from co-writer Joseph Earle who stood on the sidelines during filming and screamed words like ‘MORE’ and ‘CRAZIER’. What started as gruff, monotone line deliveries in the style of Dirty Harry quickly morphed into the loony, campy amazingness we’ve come to know and love.
