As the drummer leader of the Ken Loomer Big Band, I have one featured arrangement I play to do my drum solo. I have been asked what do you think is one of the best drum solo you have ever played? Since I do so many concerts, this is hard to pick. I know Buddy Rich said his best was at the Newport Jazz Festival back in 65. John Bonham said one of his best was at Madison Square Garden doing Mobby Dick. I think this drum solo I did at the Tampa Bay Performance Arts Center has to be one of the best drum solo I have performed. I like to change the arrangements I play like this one of Love For Sale to fit a drum solo which I want to be interesting and exciting. At one point, I decided to play the bass drum with my left hand and do cross overs between the small tom. I have seen Buddy play the bass drum with his right hand, but never with the left. So I tried it with the left hand and it worked for me. Also my finger control doing the singles were so smooth for this drum solo. I changed the ending of the arrangement to add a big drum fill doing my fast triple singles with accents like what Buddy did in his 4 bar break, but I made it much longer before bringing the band in to close out this chart. Like always I want to be relaxed and just try out new idea`s all the time when doing my featured drum solo. This night, everything I played on my classic Slingerland drums was just the way I wanted it to be performed. The Big Band was roaring thanks to my outstanding musicians and they in spired me to go all out in my solo.
