Africa is breaking apart to join India

Did you know that the African continent is slowly splitting into two parts? A massive crack, known as the Great Rift Valley, has developed in Northeast Africa, stretching from the Red Sea all the way to Mozambique in the southeast. This rift is currently above sea level but is gradually getting deeper and wider. Over time, ocean water could eventually flow into it. But why is Africa breaking apart? The African tectonic plate is actually splitting into two: the Nubian Plate and the Somali Plate. The separation of these two plates is causing the rift to form and expand. This rift is growing at a rate of about 7 millimetres per year. If this continues, just 11 million years from now, the African continent could split completely, creating a new ocean basin. In approximately 200 million years, East Africa, including Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, and Madagascar, may drift across the Indian Ocean and collide with the west coast of India. This could lead to the formation of a massive mountain range along India’s western coastline, which scientists have named “Somalaya.” But who knows if humans will still be around by then?
