BioShock 2 is a first-person shooter video game developed by 2K Marin and published by 2K Games. The sequel to the 2007 game BioShock, it was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 on February 9, 2010; Feral Interactive released an OS X version on March 30, 2012. Set in the underwater dystopian city of Rapture, the game takes place in 1968, eight years after the events of BioShock. Assuming control of an armored character known as Subject Delta, players must fight Splicers—the psychotic human population of the city—who have weapons and an array of genetic modifications. The game also includes a story-driven multiplayer mode that takes place during Rapture's civil war, before the events of the first game. BioShock 2 was chiefly developed by 2K Marin, with 2K Australia, Arkane Studios, and Digital Extremes providing additional support. The story received major changes throughout the game's development. Garry Schyman, who composed the first game's soundtrack, returned for BioShock 2. The game received positive reviews upon release, with praise directed at the game's narrative, art style, characters, ending and gameplay. Criticisms included the game's slow start and failure to distinguish itself from its predecessor. The multiplayer mode was supported with downloadable content upon launch, and a single-player campaign expansion, titled Minerva's Den, was released in August 2010. The game sold more than 3 million copies, but did not meet the publisher's sales expectations. Retrospective reviews have overall reevaluated the game as a worthy member of the BioShock franchise. A remastered version of the game was released as part of BioShock: The Collection for Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
