Bugatti is famous for its massive W16 engine. This is Bugatti’s W16 engine that was used in cars like the Bugatti Chiron and Veyron. But now Bugatti wants to replace its W16 engine with a V16 engine. Now whether it’s a W16 or a V16, both engines have 16 cylinders, so what’s the real difference and which one is more powerful? In a V16 engine, the cylinders are arranged in a V shape, while in a W16 engine, the cylinders are arranged in a W shape. A V16 engine has two banks of eight cylinders each, whereas a W16 engine has four banks of four cylinders each. Because of its design, the W16 engine is much more compact, while the V16 engine design is around 400 millimeters longer. Due to its compact size, the W16 engine provides smoother acceleration, but the V16 engine can deliver higher power output. The main reason Bugatti is shifting from W16 to V16 is that the W16 relies heavily on turbocharging, and as soon as the turbochargers are removed, these engines start facing intake issues. Another big reason is that hybridization is much easier with a V16 engine. That’s why in the new Bugatti Tourbillon, the V16 engine is paired with three electric motors, producing around 800 horsepower.
