From liner notes by John Lissner, WPIX-FM, New York City: The Saxes Mexicanos are Claus Ogerman’s brainchild and they represent a unique approach to the most exciting influence in today’s pop music—the swinging mariachi band. One of the most talented and imaginative arrangers in his field, Claus Ogerman shows his skill and originality by using two alto saxophones in lieu of the traditional high-pitched trumpets. While the saxes state the melody, a “go-go” rhythm section delivers an irresistible beat. The overall Ogerman sound is an earthy blending of soul, jazz and Latin elements.
