A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke (4:16-30): At that time, Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. He entered the synagogue, as was his custom on the Sabbath, and he stood up to read. The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him, and when he had unrolled it, he found the passage where it was written: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me. He has sent me to preach the gospel to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of the whole synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, "Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing." And they all spoke of their approval and marveled at the gracious words that came from his lips. They said, "Is this not the son of Joseph?" And Jesus said to them, "You will surely quote to me this proverb, 'Physician, heal yourself'; do here in your hometown also what we heard you did in Capernaum." And he added, "I tell you the truth, no prophet is well received in his hometown. I assure you, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months, and there was a severe famine throughout the land. Yet Elijah was sent to none of them, except to a widow at Zarephath in the region of Sidon. And many lepers were in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha; yet none of them was healed except Naaman the Syrian." Upon hearing this, everyone in the synagogue was furious. They stood up and pushed him out of the town, heading for a cliff on the hill where their town was located, intending to throw him off the cliff. But Jesus pushed his way through them and walked away.
